A few facts comparing Charlotte to other recent Olympic Host Cities
- When Atlanta won the bid for the 1996 Summer Olympics in 1990, they had a population of 394,175. Charlotte had 430,023, while our state capital of Raleigh had just 222394 (US Census Bureau).
- As of 2013, Charlotte has 792,862 (84% growth) compared to Atlanta's 447,841 (13.6% growth) and Raleigh's 431,746 (US Census Bureau).
- The Charlotte Metro area is projected to grow to approximately 70% over the next 15 years, to nearly 3.5million residents (http://wfae.org/post/charlotte-and-raleigh-lead-us-projected-population-growth). That would put us nearly on par with the Athens Metro area, which had just over 3.7million in 2004 when they hosted the XXVIII Olympics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athens#Demographics) and slightly smaller than Sydney in 2000, which had a population around 4.1million (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Sydney).
